Find a location to live

When you move to the Netherlands you will need a roof over your head.

Fortunately there are many options available, from staying in 5-star hotels to sleeping under a bridge. Unfortunately it will most likely take you a while to get the accommodation you want so you will probably have to settle for the one you can get.

We have some articles that will tell you how to get a roof over your head. This article will focus on where that roof might be.

Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Amsterdam

If you are new to the Netherlands you probably only ever heard of one city name: Amsterdam. So that is where you should live right? Unfortunately you are not the only one with that idea.

If we look at the population growth of Amsterdam we can see that the city has consistently been growing. This has had a significant impact on housing prices, making it by far the most expensive city in the Netherlands to live in.

Now, maybe you are dead-set on living in Amsterdam. I don’t blame you, the city is beautiful and historic, and there is a lot to do. Maybe a bit too much tourists though.

If you don’t mind travelling a bit there are quite some options available nearby. I’ll discuss some options below.

The Randstad

The Randstad is a designation for the area that covers the land between 4 major cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht). There are also a number of smaller cities insiders this area (Gouda, Amstelveen etc). All cities are very different in size, but also culturally. What they do have in common is that most cities within The Randstad are easily reachable by car or public transport from other cities in The Randstad. For example there is a ‘subway’ connection that connects The Hague and Rotterdam.
